Title:
Sustainable development and efficient power conversion: power electronic multilevel converter topologies

Abstract:

Since the conception of the silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), significant developments in the field of power electronics have contributed decisively to the development of numerous practical applications. However, the voltage, current, and switching frequency ratings regarding the semiconductor limits often impose severe restrictions to the increase of power levels. In particular, high voltages are quite hard to be converted when the simple series-connection of semiconductors is considered, which is typically not efficient in practice. Within this scenario, distinct techniques have been proposed since the 1970s in order to share appreciable voltage stresses among many semiconductors. Since then, the use of power electronic converters has been expanded to a point that it allows applications even on power systems in order to improve its performance. This lecture is focused on the description of the main multilevel converter topologies dedicated to this purpose, while existing modulation techniques are also described. It is also supposed to detail emerging applications regarding multilevel converters configured as Solid-State Transformers (or Smart Transformers), which can be a game changer in the future of smart grids.
