« Sustainable Development Applications »

Title:
Sustainable development of renewable energy generators in electrical networks with advanced protections

Abstract:

Traditionally, the requirements used in the processes of specification, design and construction of electric power systems are designed to provide electricity to consumers while respecting limits of tolerance related to the voltage levels and the continuity of supply. The deregulation process has compelled the electric utilities to operate in an environment of competition, which has resulted in costs reduction. Currently, the increase in energy demand, in particular from renewable sources, together with the need for increased system reliability and improved quality of service impose new challenges to the sector. These constant changes of scenery have greatly boosted the research development in the field of electric power systems. Initially, the goal of these studies was restricted to improvements in the continuity of the network service and the power quality delivered to the consumer. Currently, efforts have focused on increasing application of digital technology, with regards to monitoring, supervision, protection, measuring and control systems and the study of new topologies that can accommodate the distributed generators adequately, in order to meet the growing demand.

In this context, this lecture focus on presenting fault location methods for power distribution networks, considering radial distribution feeders, and distribution networks that have generation units connected along their feeders. The presentation will give an overview on fault location methods in distribution networks, and will focus on impedance-based methods.
