Abstract

In this talk João Soares will discuss the complexity of some smart grid problems including the energy resource management (ERM) in smart grids (SG). In fact, typical mathematical approaches rely on simplifications to make the formulations tractable. When the models are close to real-world situations, issues related to scalability, execution time, memory computing requirements, or even uncertainty, arise and limit the applicability of standard tools. To overcome such limitations, computational intelligence (CI), a family of problem-solving/stating techniques that attempt to exhibit the intelligence observed in nature, has successfully been applied to complex problems in the energy domain. This talk revises some CI approaches, mainly Evolutionary Computation (EC), for solving complex SG problems, envisaging the potential of such techniques and future research venues of CI in the energy domain. In addition, Joao Soares will present an overview of some tools GECAD has been working in the last years, GECAD developed an ERM framework that includes CI optimization algorithms to solve a variety of case studies. Just to name a few of the CI applications, our ERM platform includes several EC optimization algorithms for energy dispatching and vehicle-to-grid/smart charging that have been validated and proposed throughout a series of algorithm competitions worldwide available on http://www.gecad.isep.ipp.pt/ERM-competitions.

João Soares attained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UTAD University in 2017. He currently conducts research at GECAD – Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development, in the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto and has been an invited visiting professor at Ecole Centrale de Lille – L2EP since 2019.
He has contributed to more than 140 publications in the field of power systems and computational intelligence. His works have been cited over 3200 times (H-index 29 in google scholar). He has participated in several national and international research funded projects and currently he is involved in the coordination of two FCT projects concerning energy resource management in smart grids (PTDC/EEI-EEE/28983/2017) and smart buildings (PTDC/EEI-EEE/29070/2017). Joao Soares is vice-chair of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Taskforce 3 and has been contributing to bridging the gap between computational intelligence and power system engineers, namely with numerous efforts, in particular with dedicated algorithm competitions in international specialized venues since 2017.
