Abstract
Hybrid vehicles offer several advantages in terms if mileage and fuel economy, however, a comparison with electric vehicles, conventional vehicles, and hybrid vehicles with other forms of energy is required to decide the best options for the future. Also, how these vehicles perform in terms of utility and cost, meeting GHG and fossil fuel usage reduction target needs to be evaluated. There are several differences between a conventional automotive powertrain and a hybrid (engine + battery) powertrain in terms of architecture and a key feature allows engine to operate at its most efficient operating point by utilizing the battery. Hybrid vehicles can be classified based sources of energy, degree of hybridization, arrangement of components, and utilization of energy. Together with optimized design and energy management control, desired objectives in terms of fuel
consumption, emissions, cost, lifetime of components, etc can be addressed. Before developing an energy management control scheme, an overview of driving cycles and computation of energy demand is essential. Energy management strategies can be broadly classified into rule-based and optimization based with the main target of controlling the power split device. Rule based strategies employ expert designed rules to control the power split whereas optimal strategies minimize or maximize an objective function. The performance of energy management strategies can be greatly improved when combined with driving pattern prediction/recognition.
About the Speaker
Bedatri Moulik holds a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and Masters degree in Control and Instrumentation. She has completed her PhD in 2016 from University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Her topic of research is power management, control, and optimization in hybrid vehicles, battery state estimation, and driving pattern recognition. Dr.
Moulik is an Assistant Professor at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida, India in the Department of Automobile Engineering at Amity Institute of Technology. She is also a member of the international committee of the EMR summer schools and Visiting Researcher with the Laboratoire d’Electrotechnique et d’Electronique de Puissance (L2EP) at the University of Lille since 2023. Dr. Moulik has also been elected as the VPP technical committee member of the IEEE VPPC conference 2023.
