Abstract

Due to the rising concerns of pollution both globally as well as in developing nations such as India, government organizations, industries and scientific researchers are trying to address the issues of transport electrification and renewable energy integration. Several options are available in the form of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. The main challenges are however to find suitable replacement for the internal combustion engine by comparing the energy and power density of the available sources/storage elements. Lithium-ion batteries are popular due to their improved performance over traditional batteries however, they suffer from major lifetime issues and are prone to degradation if the charging/discharging and operating temperature are not controlled. Battery management systems aim to control the charging/discharging, temperature, balancing of cells, communication, fault diagnosis, and many other tasks provided suitable software models are available for state of charge estimation. Battery models can be classified into model based and model free methods whereby, equivalent circuit models are a popular choice due to their simplicity and real-time applicability. For state of charge estimation from simple methods such as Coulomb counting and OCV method to more sophisticated methods can be developed however, consideration of state of health with the help of an aging model is equally important to obtain an accurate remaining charge estimation.

About the Speaker

Bedatri Moulik holds a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering and Masters degree in Control and Instrumentation. She has completed her PhD in 2016 from University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Her topic of research is power management, control, and optimization in hybrid vehicles, battery state estimation, and driving pattern recognition. Dr.
Moulik is an Assistant Professor at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida, India in the Department of Automobile Engineering at Amity Institute of Technology. She is also a member of the international committee of the EMR summer schools and Visiting Researcher with the Laboratoire d’Electrotechnique et d’Electronique de Puissance (L2EP) at the University of Lille since 2023. Dr. Moulik has also been elected as the VPP technical committee member of the IEEE VPPC conference 2023.
