Sustainable development and eco-design for more efficient electric drives

Abstract

In Europe, electrical motors consumed 1065 TWh of electrical energy in 2005, which represented more than 30% of the total produced electrical energy in these countries with an equivalent CO2 emission of 427 Mt. It is expected that this consumption will increase to 1252 MWh in 2020 if no measures are taken. The total electric energy production in France, e.g., was no more than 575 TWh in 2008. The European commission, concerned about the sustainability and the CO2 emission, developed the Ecodesign instructions and the related legislation, which concerns among others the efficiency of certain class and power of electrical machines. The purpose of this lecture is to introduce the student to the main principles of the ecodesign, review the requirements of the European legislation on the efficiency of electrical machines and explain how efficient motors can be designed. The efficient use of motors and motor-drives will be introduced and examples of electrical motor simulations and related methodologies will also be shortly presented.

About the Speaker

Anouar Belahcen is a professor at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland, and Professor  (visiting) at Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn, Estonia. He received the MSc. Tech. degree in electrical engineering from Helsinki University of Technology in 1998, and the Dr. Tech. degree in electrical engineering from the same University in 2004. Since then he has been within the Helsinki University of Technology, which is now part of the Aalto University. His research interests are the design modelling and analysis of electrical machines with an emphasis on incorporating coupled material models in the numerical simulation of these machines and the study of parasitic effects such as vibrations and noise as well as power losses. He has authored or co-authored 90 journal and 100 conference publications and instructed several doctoral theses. He also managed several academic and industrial projects dealing with the modeling and integration of electrical machines. Anouar is the vice-head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation and the director of the Master Programme in Automation and ElectricalEngineering.
