Title:
Sustainable development for smart grid – Comprehensive Frequency Regulation of Wind Power Systems

Abstract:

The presentation “Comprehensive Frequency Regulation of Wind Power Systems” will give an overview on wind power generation technologies and introduce a new methodology called “Comprehensive Frequency Regulation” for controlled frequency response of wind power systems. Due to a growing penetration of wind power into the modern power grid, there is a significant interest in exploring potential capabilities of wind turbine generators to participate in system frequency regulation during grid events. Nevertheless, most variable speed wind turbines are still unable to provide frequency regulation by delivering additional active power due to the complete decoupling between rotor speed and grid frequency as well as its normal maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation. In this seminar, a novel comprehensive frequency regulation (CFR) scheme is presented based on coordinated rotor speed control and modified pitch angle control. From simulation results, the proposed CFR can greatly enhance the frequency regulation capability of wind power plants in a power system in reducing the initial rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), raising the frequency nadir as well as minimizing the steady-state frequency deviation.
