Climate change, energy conversion and smart grid challenges.

Résumé de l’intervention du 29 avril 2015:
In today’s changing world the emerging smart grid concept takes place and imposes a new direction to power systems around the world. This new electricity concept is mostly characterized by: utility grid modernization, energy efficiency, local management of energy and power&data exchange between the utility and consumers. In order to achieve those high level characteristics of future power systems, new energy conversion technologies and effective management and control systems are required; these new conversion technologies must be specifically targeted towards the integration of renewable and sustainable energy like solar and wind power, and hydrogen technologies.
The advanced electronics, informatics and information technologies make possible the new generation energy management systems with the real-time analysis of data and the local and remote control of intelligent loads which provide solutions for consumers and help utilities to better manage the electricity production.
The purpose of this lecture is to present: a summary of our research activity on energy conversion and smart grid at the “Intistut de Recherche sur l’Hydrogène (IRH)” and the “Groupe de Recherche en Électronique Industrielle (GREI)”. We’ll also consider three critical aspects from climate changes to energy generation efficiency. First, some previous and the lately emerging energy conversion technologies and electricity generation problems and their analysis according to climate changes challenges will be discussed. Second, the energy storage systems will be also examined in a general way; and third, a special focus on the state of the art of the demand side management systems (DSMS) will be discussed. We will also discuss about our achievements on the control and energy management strategies for the smart grid operation.
