Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are expanding fast worldwide, despite some challenges and paradigm shifts. EVs charging is one ofthe challenges going on but EVs present also several opportunities to serve as flexibility providers for the electric distribution
grid. The main challenges in this field relate to the building of infrastructure, grid integration, and regulatory frameworks. However, there are significant opportunities for incorporating EVs into the power grid, such as increased utilization of renewable energy sources, flexibility services, and enhanced grid stability. The future advancements of the electric distribution system seem to depend significantly on the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
After a brief presentation of some trends in EVs, a comprehensive examination of the opportunities, challenges, and trends associated with the grid interaction and electric mobility will be done, to present the future landscape in this field. Some projects at IPC and INESC Coimbra will also be referred to.
