Future electrical systems require high efficiency, high power density electrical power conversion with low cost, where power electronics systems play an important role.
With advantages such as lower resistance, smaller capacitance and higher operation temperature than traditional silicon (Si) devices, wide bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor devices (silicon carbide SiC and gallium nitride GaN) can bring a step change in modern electrical power conversion and meet future electrical systems requirements. However, advantages of WBG devices cannot be fully exploited by simply replacing them to Si devices. In order to have a clear understanding of WBG devices, developing new power electronics technologies is necessary to maximise their advantage, which offer a broad application in modern transport systems, integrated drive and electrical energy transfer.
State of the art of WBG devices on device characteristics, switching, modelling and measurement techniques will be presented in the first part of the seminar, where audience will know the advantages and challenges of those devices. In the second part of the seminar, the application of WBG devices in high efficiency, high power-density electrical systems will be presented, where audience will see more demonstrators on how to better exploit WBG advantages in modern electrical systems, such as electrical vehicles, integrated drive, modern power electronics systems design and electrical energy transfer. In the last part of the seminar, perspectives of future WBG devices research and application will be presented, in which audience will understand WBG devices application trend in electrical power conversion systems.

About the Speaker

Dr. Ke Li received B.E and M.E degrees in electrical engineering from the Southwest Jiaotong University, China, in 2008 and 2011 respectively, and the Eng. degree from the Ecole Centrale de Marseille, France, in 2011.
